At World Coffee Beans, we love meeting people who shape the coffee world with their passion and curiosity. Today, we’re excited to feature Asama Vichaidit, or simply Mook, a barista and coffee lover whose journey began in an unexpected way and grew into a career full of purpose.

Beginning the Coffee Journey

Mook’s story starts in Bangkok during her university years. Back then, specialty coffee wasn’t popular yet, cafés mainly served drinks like iced mochas and cappuccinos. But for her, coffee shops like Starbucks and True Coffee were more than just places to grab a drink.

“They felt safe and peaceful,” she recalls. “It was a place where I could study, read, and work on homework. I still remember how one barista always remembered my drink order. That small connection made me curious about the world of coffee.”

After graduation, she returned to Chiang Mai and found a one-day barista course. That single class sparked a deeper passion. Borrowing a home espresso machine from a friend, she practiced latte art and pulling espresso shots late into the night. Soon, weekends at a local café turned into hands-on training, and eventually, she took a bold step, entering a barista competition.

Winning the champion title was a turning point. “That moment made me realize that coffee was my true happiness. So I quit my full-time job and decided to pursue this path fully.”

Excitement in Coffee Trends

When asked about trends, Mook doesn’t point to just one. Instead, she enjoys exploring how coffee culture changes in different countries.

“I’m always excited to see what each country brings to the table. Coffee reflects the people, their culture, and their way of life. That makes it alive.”

Favorite Drink

Mook keeps her coffee preference simple: black coffee. Whether it’s an Americano or a clean filter brew, that’s her go-to choice. “Black coffee really lets you experience the flavors of the beans,” she explains.

Essential Tools

While some baristas rely on expensive machines, Mook highlights two humble but powerful tools: a scale and a thermometer.

“These two make a big difference. They help with accuracy and consistency, which are so important in brewing.”

Staying Current and Learning

For Mook, one of the best ways to stay inspired and up to date is by judging coffee competitions.

“Every competition teaches you something. You get to taste coffee made by the best in the industry, using new techniques and unique equipment. It’s impossible to fall behind when you’re in that environment.”

A Cup a Day (or Two)

So how many cups does she drink daily? Mook smiles, “Usually two. One is my Asama blend, and the other is usually a new roast I want to test.”

Final Thoughts

From late-night study sessions in Bangkok cafés to winning competitions and judging some of the best coffee makers in the world, Mook’s story shows how curiosity can grow into a lifelong passion.

Her journey is a reminder that coffee is not just about the drink; it’s about connection, discovery, and finding joy in the process.

Thank you very much Khun Mook, for this story! 🙂
